Discover Roy’s Redwoods Trail for All
For a peaceful stroll through the redwoods, consider visiting Roy's Redwoods Open Space Preserve in Woodacre. A newly constructed trail now allows visitors of all abilities to experience the beauty of this old-growth redwood forest. Previously, only dirt trails meandered through the park, but in 2024, Marin County Parks completed an accessibility project featuring boardwalks, an accessible portable restroom, and a children’s exploration area that is only partially accessible.
For a leisurely walk, you can combine the less-than-quarter-mile loop around a small pond with the half-mile out-and-back Fairy Ring Trail. While traffic noise from Nicasio Valley Road is noticeable near the entrance, deeper into the preserve, you’ll find a serene atmosphere among the towering redwoods. A newly restored meadow promises a brilliant display of native wildflowers in the spring. Since little sunlight penetrates the dense forest canopy, be sure to bring warm clothing.
Accessible parking is limited to one designated roadside space near the ramp leading down to the trail. Weekends can be busy, so arriving early is recommended.
Marin County Parks continues to prioritize accessibility, as demonstrated by this new trail. Excitingly, plans are in place to introduce adapted all-terrain equipment for use on more rugged trails—stay tuned for updates!
