BORP has been organizing enrichment programming for blind and low-vision youth in Oakland for several years, providing meaningful opportunities for adventure, connection, and skill development.
Each quarter, BORP staff plan a diverse range of outings for these teens, from outdoor adventures like hiking, beach trips, and kayaking to real-world excursions such as amusement parks and other engaging experiences. Beyond the fun and camaraderie, these outings support youth in developing essential orientation and mobility skills, fostering confidence and independence in their daily lives. BORP is also able to provide transportation for each outing on our two buses.
Two recent trips were big highlights. Right efore the Holidays, a group of 10 youth worked together to complete a “scavenger hunt,” at Bay Street Emeryville. They went to various stores and had to ask employees questions and write down their answers. They were rewardded competing the hunt with french fries at the Shake Shack.
“It was an interesting learning experience having to work together with other kids to find our way and get answers.” — Oakland youth
Another week, several youth were able to practice indoor climbing and challenge themselves both mentally and physically. Our friends from our partner organization ParaCliffHangers showed the youth how to create their figure 8 tie in knots, and how to ascend and descend the climbing wall. They received coaching on the routes and tried their skills at different difficulty levels.
“I was surprised that we could make it all the way up there and that I was strong enough to do it. My favorite part of climbing is coming down once I finish the route. It feels like I’m in one of those spy movies and I’m a secret agent. We felt like we were in the Barbie Spy Squad movie.” — Kelli, Oakland youth
These outings are made possible thanks to our grant from the Oakland Fund for Children and Youth (OFCY).
