Building Stronger Teams: Our Transformative Weekend at the NWBA Camp in Fort Wayne

In August, coach Jorge Macias attended the NWBA Wheelchair Basketball Fundamentals camp in Fort Wayne, Indiana, along with coach Armando Rodriguez and team member Artur Renowitzky. In the words of Jorge: “We trained intensely on basketball fundamentals with top NWBA coaches. The experience was invaluable, boosting our skills and confidence as coaches. I’m excited to bring these skills back to both teams.”

BORP currently has two recreational teams, one in Berkeley and one in San Francisco. Last season, the Berkeley team’s 5-1 record at the BORP-hosted wheelchair basketball tournament demonstrated again the need for this team to raise its sights and compete at a higher level, but the only other level available is the D-1 level, which includes the country’s top tier team. Armando came back from the Camp feeling prepared to start a D-3 team with BORP’s support, offering a much-needed competitive level for our players. Establishing the Bay Area’s first D-3 wheelchair basketball team would bridge the gap and provide our growing program with that essential experience of competition on the court.

Thank you to NWBA for hosting the Camp and the awesome players and coaches who made it such a valuable experience.
