Expo Day FAQ
Activities will take place at three Berkeley Locations:
- James Kenney Community Center: (1720 8th Street, Berkeley): The main event hub- this location will offer wheelchair rugby, goalball, power soccer, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair basketball, fitness classes, and all-day pickleball. Kenney will also feature a family festival and resource fair with games, contests, arts and crafts, and community vendors. Kenney will have activities going from 10AM-4PM.
- BORP Adaptive Cycling & Kayak Center: (80 Bolivar Dr, Berkeley). This location will offer cycling and kayaking from 11:00-2:00
- Berkeley Ironworks: (800 Potter St, Berkeley): This location will offer climbing from 1-4. If you have never climbed at a Touchstone facility before, please fill out the gym’s waiver form beforehand: https://touchstoneclimbing.com/waiver/
All locations offer accessible restrooms.
Yes! BORP will be providing an accessible shuttle service from North Berkeley BART to all three locations. The shuttle will be free of charge. Our bus has a lift can accommodate power manual and power wheelchairs. If you will require transportation, please register at least one week prior to the event: after that we will not be able to guarantee transportation. We will provide the transportation schedule for those who sign up closer to the Expo. For additional, transportation related inquiries please contact transportation@borp.org
There is free street parking around James Kenney and some spaces will be specifically reserved for Expo attendees. Ironworks has a parking lot. Parking near our cycling center is limited due to construction in the area. We can best accommodate parking for everyone if you come to our gate before parking and let us direct you to a spot according to our plan for the day. The N. Berkeley BART also has plenty of parking and BORP shuttles will run to all locations from there.
All Expo clinics, classes, and activities are provided free of charge to the community. BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation is a non-profit that relies on donation to keep our programming accessible to the entire community, so we welcome donations if you are able.
We strongly encourage all interested participants to sign-up ahead of time at the link provided here. Registration will help us plan and accommodate attendees. If you require BORP transportation or want to participate in rock climbing, you MUST register ahead of time.

Our blind and low-vision community may enjoy the following:
- Goalball: a popular team for the blind and visually impaired, Goalball is an indoor sport played by two teams of three. All players wear eyeshades, ensuring a level playing field. Players aim to throw an audible ball past the opponents and into their net to score points. Players stay on their hands and knees to defend their net and score against their opponents.
- Rock Climbing: Rapidly gaining in popularity, rock climbing is easily adapted. Visually impaired climbers often work with sight guides called callers, who visually describe the climbing holds as a climber ascends.
- Cycling: BORP has a wide-variety of cycles available- including tandem bikes which are often utilized by blind cyclists and pilots who provide guiding.
- Kayaking: BORP has many double kayaks which provide opportunities for blind kayakers to kayak in partnership with guides.
- Fitness: Our live fitness classes- Rumba with Tina and Sitfit with Nate are upbeat dance and strength training workout classes for all ages and abilities! (A great class for everyone, including those who are blind or visually impaired.)
You may enjoy the following activities:
- Wheelchair Basketball: A long-time adaptive sport, wheelchair basketball has very similar rules to stand-up (including same court, hoop, and ball) but all athletes play from a lightweight wheelchair that is specially designed to provide increased agility, balance, and stability.
- Pickleball: A new favorite- adaptive pickleball is played with the same court, paddle, and ball but players are allowed two bounces instead of one. A big appeal of pickleball is that adaptive athletes can play against and alongside their nondisabled friends.
- Rock Climbing: Rapidly gaining in popularity, rock climbing is easily adapted. We will have a variety of mechanical systems and equipment available to provide balance, stability, and mechanical assistance for those who require it.
- Cycling: BORP has a wide-variety of cycles available- including recumbent trikes (including electric) and multiple styles of handcycles.
- Kayaking: BORP has a number of tools to assist with transferring into an out of a kayak (slide bench, multiple transfer chairs, motorized lift), as well as a wheelchair accessible dock and stable kayaks.
- Fitness: Our live fitness classes- Rumba with Tina and Sitfit with Nate are upbeat dance and strength training workout classes for all ages and abilities!
- Wheelchair Rugby: An intense and action-packed sports, rugby is played in specially designed manual wheelchairs that are designed for contact. Initially created for quadriplegics, anyone with impairment in three or more limbs is eligible; players must be able to self-power a manual wheelchair and be able to safely withstand direct contact.
- Power Soccer: The first competitive team sport designed specifically for power chair users, power soccer is played on a standard basketball court with 4 players per team; similar to stand-up players pass and shoot in an attempt to score goals. Often played with in power chairs designed for speed, all players attach a footguard to their chair.
- Rock Climbing: Rapidly gaining in popularity, rock climbing is easily adapted. We will have a variety of mechanical systems and equipment available to provide balance, stability, and mechanical assistance for those who require it.
- Pickleball: A new favorite- adaptive pickleball is played with the same court, paddle, and ball but players are allowed two bounces instead of one. Participants often tape or wrap their paddle to their hands and many play from power wheelchairs. A big appeal of pickleball is that adaptive athletes can play against and alongside their nondisabled friends.
- Cycling: BORP has a wide-variety of cycles available- including multiple styles of handcycles, some of which can be attached to other bikes for a tandem ride. BORP cycling center also has a lift to aid in transfers to and from bikes.
- Kayaking: BORP has a number of tools to assist with transferring into an out of a kayak (slide bench, multiple transfer chairs, motorized lift), as well as a wheelchair accessible dock, stabilizing outriggers, and adaptive mitts and paddles.
- Fitness: Our live fitness classes- Rumba with Tina and Sitfit with Nate are upbeat dance and strength training workout classes for all ages and abilities!
Absolutely! We are especially excited to get new adaptive athletes in the game- our coaches and staff are specially trained and prepared to introduce new participants to their activities.
You should come to EXPO expecting to get a little taste of our programming. For our team sports- we aim to get everyone out on the court for at least a few minutes and we hope those taking the fitness class will jump right in. Participants interested cycling, climbing, and kayaking can expect to check out and ask questions about our range of adaptive equipment and may get to cycle/paddle/climb for a little bit.
The food truck Mestizo will be at James Kenney selling tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and more from 11:30-2:30. Click on the link to view the full menu. We will have free snacks available as well so no one will go hungry!
James Kenney has two refillable water stations- please bring your own bottle and help us reduce waste! Our cycling center will have water available.
